The First Pages of My New Journal: Why Reading the Bible Every Day Matters

This week I filled the last page of my journal.

Every time I start a new journal, I go back through my old one and look at the Bible verses and quotes I've collected over the past year. Then I decide which ones I want to carry over. This week, as I flipped through those pages, I noticed a theme—and I could see why reading the Bible every day matters.

Stay in God's Word.

The timing was perfect because last Sunday our pastor talked about the importance of reading the Bible every day—not just reading it, but applying it.

As I looked through the verses I'd written down, I could see why reading the Bible matters.

God's Word feeds us.

...whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. Psalm 1:2-3

A tree planted by water has what it needs to grow. We do too when we're rooted in God's Word.

God's Word guides us.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word... I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11

God's Word gives us direction. It helps us know what is true and how to live.

God's Word opens our eyes.

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18

I love this prayer. It's a reminder to open my Bible expecting God to teach me something.

God's Word helps us remember.

I will remember the deeds of the LORD.. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Psalm 77:11-12

When I spend time reading the Bible, I learn about God's character and His faithfulness—not only throughout history, but in my own life.

God's Word changes us.

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly... And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Colossians 3:16-17

Reading the Bible isn't about checking a box. It's about letting God's Word shape the way we think, speak, and live.

Looking back through my old journal, it wasn't the quotes that stood out the most.

It was the number of verses that said the same truth.

The Bible isn't just another book. It's food for our souls. It gives wisdom when we're confused, strength when we're exhausted, hope when we're discouraged, and truth when the world feels noisy.

My new journal has a lot of blank pages waiting to be filled. But before I fill them with my own thoughts, I want to fill the first few pages with God's.

Make Monday Matter

If you've drifted away from reading your Bible consistently, don't wait until Monday or the first of the month to begin again. Open it today. Read one chapter. Spend a few minutes thinking about one verse. Then ask yourself, "How can I live this out today?"
