A Week That Didn't Go to Plan

It was that time of year again . . . annual physical.

The good news? I'm in "good shape" for my age. The less exciting news was that I was apparently dehydrated, which explained a few things about how I'd been feeling. I left thinking, Noted. Water first, coffee second . . . or maybe coffee and then water, but definitely more water.

My week was a little like that appointment—nothing alarming, just a lot of small things that didn't quite line up the way they were supposed to.

We headed to the camper on Monday because the forecast looked promising. It wasn't. It was rain. So we stayed inside, played games, and made it work anyway. When it finally cleared, my youngest built a sandcastle while I took a nap on the beach, which sounds more peaceful than it actually is when you realize how quickly the window of "good weather" opens and closes around everything else going on.

Of course, the sun didn't really show up until later in the afternoon—right about the time we had to leave for volleyball for my oldest.

The next day was extremely full. Early morning run at 6, volleyball drop-off at 7, softball game at 8:30. Then back to the camper again, hoping for a repeat of the sunshine we missed the day before. We finally got it. Real sun. Hot, heavy, full-summer heat. I even had to take a break from mowing that evening because I could feel I was pushing it a little too far.

Which, again, made sense when I remembered the dehydration comment from my physical.

Wednesday we tried again. More rain. Not a downpour, just steady and unhelpful. It certainly made me rethink the effort of packing and unpacking and driving back and forth. So we called it. Packed up and headed home instead, choosing productivity over waiting on weather that didn't seem interested in cooperating.

It wasn't the week we planned.

But it was still a week with camper time, hanging out with my girls while it rained, with a sandcastle that didn't need perfect conditions, with a few brief hours of real sun, and with another reminder for this planner that sometimes the goal isn't to get the plan right—it's to keep adjusting it as you go.

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." — Psalm 118:24
