God Cared About the Fern Too

With a day off from work I ran errands, including my big Costco run to stock up for the month. As I walked through the store I noticed several people with huge green ferns in their carts. I love ferns and have bought one for our deck the last couple of years, so I started looking for them too. I wandered through the aisles but never found them and eventually went to checkout.

On my way out there they were right at the store entrance. A whole display of beautiful ferns at a reasonable price too! I stood there for a second considering whether I should go back in, but the thought of going through the checkout line again was enough to have me head for my car. I figured it just wasn’t meant to be this year and moved on with my day of more errands, school pickup, and dentist appointments.

The next morning I was off to Bible study when I got a message from the orthodontist asking if they could see my youngest right away because of something they noticed on her dental x-rays. Change of plans. I left Bible study early and hurried to pick her up from school.

Thankfully it turned out not to be an emergency at all. There were a couple hidden surprises with the extra trip: first, the orthodontist moved up the date for my daughter getting her braces off, and second, the orthodontist office was right next to Costco.

Guess who finally got her fern?

Driving home with that fern in the back of my car, I was amazed again at how God works through ordinary moments. The thing I thought I had missed out on found its way back to me through a completely unexpected turn in the day.

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

I spend a lot of time trying to organize my days, map out plans, and make things fit neatly where I think they belong, and God continues to shake things up by arranging details I can’t see. His plans are definitely better than mine!

And apparently…He even cares about ferns.
