When God Puts a Bucket on Your Head

A few weeks ago, I wrote about doing the work God has prepared for you. Well, I have to tell you about my friend Emily (Emmy from run_emmy_run) because God put some pretty ridiculous work in front of her, and somehow it has gone viral.
Emily is a wife, mom, Early Childhood Special Education teacher (yes, my coworker!), runner and follower of Jesus. Back in December 2020, she started running every single day, and when I say every day, I mean every day. She is not a treadmill runner, so she runs through Minnesota heat, cold, rain, snow and wind. She has even run in -50 degrees. I’m not even kidding.
Recently, she has been dealing with another very Minnesota problem: deer flies. A local farmer gave her a tip for surviving deer fly season, and his solution involved running around with a bucket on her head.
So Emily did what any completely normal runner would do. She put a bucket on her head, went for her run and posted a reel of it on social media. And it went VIRAL. Who knew that running around with a bucket on your head was going to be the thing millions of people wanted to watch? But here we are.
I'll put the video here because you really need to see it for yourself.
Emily's bucket run made me think about the work God puts in front of us. Sometimes what God asks us to do makes perfect sense. Other times, it looks a little ridiculous to everyone watching.
I wonder what Noah's neighbors thought when he started building a massive boat on dry land. I'm guessing a few people thought he had completely lost it. But Noah wasn't building the ark because it made sense to everyone else. He was doing what God had asked him to do.
“By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.” Hebrews 11:7
Noah couldn't see what was coming, but he did the work God had given him to do anyway.
That's what I see in Emily's story. She wasn't trying to go viral or become a social media sensation. She was doing what she had committed to do: run every single day. When the deer flies became a problem, she found a ridiculous-looking solution and kept running. And then, somehow, millions of people ended up watching.
The work God puts in front of us doesn't always seem important. It can feel like nobody notices or that what we're doing isn't making much of a difference.
Do it anyway.
You don't need to know what God is going to do with it. Just keep doing the work He's given you.
